Learn To Play Guitar Online

Today, it’s fairly easy to learn to play guitar online. You can easily find many web sites dedicated to teaching you guitar from scratch. Many are extremely well thought out and offer professional level instruction. The standard format for guitar lessons is usually some kind of video supplemented with e-books, play-along recordings, guitar orientated software, and user forums.

Most of these learn to play guitar online websites are subscription based. You pay a monthly fee to access its resources. Your membership will usually give you full access to the site and all of its resources for less than $30 per month. Considering that you may be paying that amount for one private lesson, online guitar lessons are incredibly inexpensive.

Some of these learn to play guitar online sites can be a little overwhelming with literally thousands of lessons covering different styles and techniques. But don’t despair, most will have some kind of lesson plan for absolute beginners. Even intermediate players may find the beginner program useful, if not for review, as a method of learning your way around the site and its offerings.

One thing to remember while you learn to play guitar online, is that it is a self-study method. This means that in order to progress you will have to be fairly organized and disciplined about your practice time. Many video lessons only last a few minutes. It is tempting to watch and play along to the lesson and then move on to the next one. You should try to review each lesson carefully, however. Download and study the lesson transcription if there is one, or make notes for yourself. Then review and master the lesson before moving on. Depending on the complexity of the lesson, you may need to do this over several practice sessions.

If you’re able to stick with your program and establish a regular practice routine, you should be able to learn to play guitar online and cover the fundamentals of the instrument in just a few months. You’ll learn the basic open chords, a hand-full of basic strumming patterns, how to play and read single line melodies, and a few open position scales. Mastering these fundamentals will prepare you for the big leagues and enable you to enjoy many hours spent leisurely playing the guitar.

I always recommend to online students to fully take advantage of their program's resources. For example, read and post to the forums.

Reading the forums will help you overcome the inherent shortcoming of any learn to play guitar online self-study program – the lack of feedback on your progress. The forums will add to your understanding of the guitar and help you overcome any difficulties you may have while learning to play the instrument. Posts by other students will give you ideas and ways about thinking about music, and perhaps inspire you to learn a particular style or technique. You will also learn the language of music and more about the great players of the guitar.

By posting your own questions and comments to the forum, you are engaging your learning process and building a community of like-minded players around you. While you learn to play guitar online you may even make a few friends you can play music with, one of the truly most rewarding aspects of learning an instrument online.
